NMBM commits to three weeks deadline to reduce 5000 water leaks backlog

A total of 1003 reported water leaks were repaired in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in the last seven days as the City is working around the clock to reduce the backlog of 5260 leaks in the next three weeks.
This comes as the City’s total dam levels have once again decreased to a low 13.62%. NMBM Infrastructure and Engineering Mayoral Committee Member, Cllr Dries van der Westhuyzen, said nine contractors have been allocated to attend to the backlog.
"We have three weeks starting from today to complete the backlog with all the resources and on a weekly basis we are monitoring progress. We have teams placed across the City dealing with various cases including leaking valves, stolen meters and service leaks. We want to encourage our residents to report water leaks to the toll free number 0800 20 50 50 number or email to waterleaks@mandelametro.gov.za,” he said.
He added that a total cumulative number of 70 067 leaks have been resolved from the 75 518 reported leaks at the NMBM call centre dating back to June 2022.
The current dam levels are as follows:
Kouga Dam: 14.10 %
Churchill Dam:28.79 %
Impofu Dam:6.87%
Loerie Dam:49.17 %
Groendal Dam: 14.63 %
TOTAL:13.62%.
Impofu Dam remains decommissioned due to the pumps having reached the river bed. The Department of Water and Sanitation have increased the allocation from the Kouga Dam for the new water year, however, this dam also supplies water to agriculture and the Kouga Local Municipality.
"If all of us could take seriously the limit of 50 litres per day, per person and stick to it, we could maximise the water that we have from all our resources. The situation is dire, our Clelsea reservior continues to struggle and as a result some of our suburbs continue to have disruptions or low pressure,” said MMC van der Westhuyzen.
