TASK Grade 9 (R269 436 – R374 592 per annum)

(Basic salary only, excluding benefits)


Qualifications and experience required:  

  • A relevant tertiary qualification, such as a National Diploma in Natural Sciences or Environmental Management.
  • A valid Code B/EB Driver’s licence (the incumbent will be required to obtain a municipal driver’s licence during the probationary period).
  • Registration as Peace Officer.
  • One to two years’ experience in a similar position.


Key attributes and competencies: 

  • Practical and theoretical knowledge of the natural environment.
  • Sound writing, communication and teaching/presentation skills to interact with scholars and members of the public at all levels.
  • Proficiency in English and at least one other official local language (essential).
  • Negotiation, problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Interpretative skills in respect of legislation and regulations.


Job purpose: 

  • The primary and overriding function is to teach environmental education to the public in Nelson Mandela Bay.
  • Presenting courses, lessons, lectures, practical demonstrations, etc.
  • Assimilating and formulating theoretical/technical data for use in formal lectures/practical demonstrations.
  • Planning and implementing environmental education programmes and controlling auxiliary/subordinate staff.
  • Liaising with community workers, teachers and school principals regarding the promotion of environmental education and awareness programmes, including environmental special days.
  • Performing administrative duties, such as reports and letters.
  • Facilitating and encouraging communities to engage in community-based environmental campaigns.
  • Acting as tour guide to visitors on excursions through nature reserves.


As part of the selection process, candidates may be tested on any requirement, skill or competency, which will include pre-employment screening, security vetting and psychometric assessment.
